Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said the U.S. could end its military campaign against Iran within two to three weeks.
Trump stressed that recent strikes have seriously damaged Iran’s missile production. “We’re hitting them very hard. Last night we knocked out a tremendous amount of missile-making facilities, as you probably read or reported,” he said. “We’ve hit bridges, and we’ll hit more. We have a couple of important bridges in mind. But if they come to the table, that would be good. Either way, we’ve set them back. It will take them 15 to 20 years to rebuild what we’ve destroyed.”
Addressing rising gas prices, Trump said, “We’re at $4, yes. But we also have a country that won’t be launching a nuclear weapon at us in six months.” When asked about how Americans are affected by higher fuel costs, he added, “They’re also feeling much safer.”
Trump described the possible de-escalation as his clearest indication so far that the month-long conflict — which has reshaped the Middle East and shaken global energy markets — could soon come to an end. “I would say within two to three weeks… All I have to do is step away from Iran, and we’ll be doing that very soon, and they will come tumbling down,” he said.
