This is the most powerful herb – it treats over 50 ailments and boosts the happiness hormone

This golden-yellow herb, which we often see along roadsides and across meadows in North Macedonia, has been considered one of the most powerful natural remedies for centuries. Its effectiveness is documented not only in old folk records but also in modern medical research in Russia and Germany.

It is not called the “herb of joy” for nothing – because it contributes even to improving mood. In fact, this herb has been proven to treat over 50 physical and mental health conditions.

We are talking about St. John’s Wort.

A remedy for the lungs, liver, and heart

St. John’s Wort helps with mucus in the lungs, stomach cramps, improves blood composition, and has beneficial effects on the kidneys, liver, spleen, and bladder. It is especially effective for problems like involuntary urination and urinary tract inflammation.

In Russia, this herb is called the “herb of joy” because it not only heals the body but also improves mental well-being. It is recommended for people suffering from depression.

Research from the Moscow Institute of Phytotherapy confirms that St. John’s Wort positively affects the central nervous system and can help with mild to moderate depression, without the side effects associated with synthetic antidepressants.

Powerful oil for skin and wounds

In traditional medicine, St. John’s Wort oil is a well-known remedy for cuts, burns, hemorrhoids, and slow-healing wounds.

The oil is made by soaking fresh flowers in cold-pressed olive oil and leaving them in the sun for about three weeks. The resulting reddish liquid is a natural antiseptic and tissue-regenerating agent.

Medical records from the 19th century note that St. John’s Wort oil was a standard part of army medical kits due to its strong effect on infections and wounds.

Supports digestion and calms the nerves

St. John’s Wort can also be used as a tea or tincture. Its essential oil, if diluted, can be ingested to remove intestinal parasites and soothe the digestive system. The phenolic compounds in the herb have strong antibacterial and antiviral properties.

St. John’s Wort tea is also recommended for people suffering from chronic fatigue, nervous tension, and insomnia because it stimulates the production of serotonin – the “happiness hormone.”

How to harvest it properly

If you pick St. John’s Wort yourself, it is important to do so in ecologically clean areas, at least 300 meters away from roads and exhaust fumes.

All medicinal herbs, including St. John’s Wort, absorb harmful substances from the air, so it is recommended to harvest them in mountainous or hilly areas, where nature is clean and unpolluted.
